GORIZ is an AGBU Europe initiative launched in 2009 to identify, train, advise and network the future leaders of European Armenian communities and provide support to them in their Armenian projects in Europe or Armenia.
This program was born from the 2006 and 2007 AGBU Project Exchange and Development Seminars for Young European Armenians that were sponsored by the Council of Europe and took place in Brussels and Valence, respectively.
Those seminars demonstrated the importance of ensuring the renewal of Armenian leadership by attracting and preparing the future leaders who will conduct the Armenian destiny of tomorrow. The seminars also identified the critical need to create the spirit of a Union to foster cohesion of Armenian actions in Europe.
The members of AGBU Europe District Committee established GORIZ, which has since hosted numerous seminars and conferences in Europe and Armenia providing opportunities to nurture the leaders of tomorrow and engage them in an active ongoing dialogue.
In 2009, the first Goriz seminar focused discussions on issues of democracy and political participation for youth. The following year, themes included economic and political development in Armenia, Armenia’s relationship with Turkey, as well as institutions for the diaspora. 2011 and 2012 seminars focused respectively on EU citizenship and media training. Proving the importance of these conferences in international forums, the most recent conferences were funded with the support of “Youth in Action” program of the European Commission.
